Unfolding the critical: Abstracts and Bio
Thierry de DuveThierry de Duve - Critical Reflections: In Bed with Madonna - abstract - textI am asked to give you my views on art criticism. This I cannot decently do by pretending to have a general theory of what art criticism is, or should be, for all art critics. I can only talk about myself and tell you how the love of art, together with a passion for theoretical understanding, are the two things that prompt me to write on art. Especially when it is theoretically inclined, art criticism is a strange intellectual endeavor, utterly subjective and yet striving after some "truth," and involving critical reflection throughout. Let me try to dissect before you what I do (or what I think I do - the risk of self-delusion is enormous) when I practice art criticism. Thierry de Duve - BiographyThe art historian and art philosopher Thierry de Duve is the author of about ten books on art and aesthetics in the modern era. He is currently visiting professor at the University of Lille 3 (France) and at the Hogeschool Sint Lucas Beeldende Kunst in Ghent (Belgium). As curator, he made the exhibition Voici - 100 ans d'art contemporain in 2000 in Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles and was responsible for the Belgian participation of Biennial in Venice in 2003. At the moment he is preparing a book onArchיologie du modernisme en peintureand a collection of essays on aesthetics. Thierry de Duve - BibliographyTop Erwin JansErwin Jans - Critical Intoxications: In Bed with Madonna without having Sex - abstract - textThe 'critical' has become a highly ambiguous notion because the notion of culture has become highly ambiguous. This ambiguity has become one of the essential chracteristics of modern criticism and should be accepted as such. I see my own professional position as a dramaturg in a theatre company as partaking in this ambiguity: at the same time involved and not involved, close to artists but not being an artist, aware of an ideological context but not being able to do much about it, active and passive at the same time. Erwin Jans - BiographyErwin Jans (1963) studied German filology and theatre studies at the Catholic University in Leuven (Belgium). He has been working for several theatres and directors as a dramaturg and is currently affiliated with the ro theater in Rotterdam. Between 1993-1998 he was responsible for the multicultural programmation of the Royal Flemish Theatre in Brussels. He teaches theatre and drama at the Cultural Studies department of the University of Leuven; dramaturgy at the Erasmus Hogeschool and the University of Antwerp. As an essayist, he published many articles on theatre, literature and the multicultural society in specialised magazines and books, as well as in the newspaper Financieel Economische Tijd . He published monographies on Wim Vandekeybus, Franz Marijnen, Arne Sierens and Dora van der Groen. Top Pieter T'JonckPieter T'JonckPieter T'Jonck was invited as respondent for the lectures of Thierry de Duve and Erwin Jans. Due to technical problems, no transcription of his comments an the ensuing debate could be made. Pieter T'Jonck - BiographyPieter T'Jonck (Belgium,1960) graduated in civil engineering/architecture. He founded his own architectural firm in 1986; since 1996 he has been working in close association with Wouter Nilis for the corporation T'Jonck-Nilis ir. architects. The winner of various contests, T'Jonck's architectural activities also affiliate him with the University of Ghent where he has been teaching since 1996. In parallel with his career as an architect, Pieter T'Jonck is the most distinguished dance critic in Belgium. He started writing about dance and theater at the moment the Belgian performing arts emerged onto the international scene. Thus his work offers a frontline testimony of the recent dance history in Belgium. After a 17 years commitment to the national newspaper De Standaard, Pieter T'Jonck now contributes to the Financieel Economische Tijd. Pieter T'Jonck is also the author of numerous articles on dance, theater, architecture and urbanism for magazines and books. Access Pieter T'Jonck's Sarma profile page. |
