Anthology Dance at the Brussels World Fair 1958
A selection of critical writings of Marcel Lobet and Georges Sion






Eind 2005 kwamen de historicus Staf Vos, de theaterwetenschapper Lieve Dierckx en Sarma samen met als gemeenschappelijke interesse Expo 1958 en de invloed van deze Wereldtentoonstelling op de ontwikkeling van de Belgische danskritiek. Het resultaat van de samenwerking is een kleine anthologie bestaande uit een dertigtal teksten. De meeste daarvan werden geschreven door Marcel Lobet, een criticus die destijds veel aandacht besteedde aan de Expo; daarnaast werden een aantal sleutelteksten van zijn tijdgenoten geselecteerd. Staf Vos leidt de anthologie in met een omkaderende tekst.

Met de anthologie rond Expo ’58 zet Sarma haar onderzoek naar de wortels van de hedendaagse danskritiek voort. Een eerste stap in die richting werd genomen met de anthologie rond Eric de Kuyper, een criticus die actief was in de jaren ’60 en tot op vandaag blijft schrijven over dans.		 En l’hiver 2005, Staf Vos (historien), Lieve Dierckx (diplômée en Etudes Théâtrales) et Sarma se sont réunis pour étudier le rôle cathartique de l’exposition universelle à Bruxelles en 1958 et son influence sur le développement de la critique chorégraphique en Belgique. Le résultat est une petite anthologie comprenant une trentaine de textes dont la plupart ont été écrits par Marcel Lobet, critique à l’époque de l’Expo 58. En complément, quelques textes-clés de contemporains ont été ajoutés ainsi qu’un essai cadrant de Staf Vos.

Avec cette anthologie, Sarma poursuit sa recherche sur les racines de la critique chorégraphique contemporaine. Une première initiative dans cette direction a été le florilège des écrits de Eric de Kuyper, dont les premières critiques datent des années 60 mais qui continue jusqu’à ce jour de consacrer des essais à la danse.

In Winter 2005, a collaboration was set up between the historian Staf Vos, the performance studies intern Lieve Dierckx and SARMA to investigate the cathartic role the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair or Expo 58 played in the development of Belgian critisism. As a result a small anthology came about, constituting more than 30 texts, many of which stem from the pen of the critic Marcel Lobet who extensively reported on the Expo 1958. In addition some other contemporaneous key-writings on dance are included as well as a contextualizing essay by Staf Vos. For the time being only a brief fragment is translated in English.

With this project Sarma continues its interest in the roots of contemporary critical practice. This rather untold story took already a first start when Sarma anthologized the writings on dance by Eric de Kuyper, who was a critic in the sixties but continued writing on dance until this day.
