The Sound of Movement, performance lecture

“Het klinkt ongetwijfeld naïef, maar ik heb dans en muziek altijd als tweelingen beschouwd omdat een reeks van bewegingen het lichaam in een muzikale toestand toont. Opeenvolgende bewegingen maken een klanklichaam en volgen een onhoorbare melodie, een enkel zichtbare klanklijn.”

Deze intuïtie is het vertrekpunt van de lecture-performance die Rudi Laermans samen met de Weense muzikant en componist Burkhard Stangl brengt. Tekst en muziek (live geïmproviseerd) worden gevoed door een video-essay met fragmenten uit dansvoorstellingen en Oosterse gevechtsfilms. De directe aanleiding van deze eenmalige voorstelling is de presentatie van een selectie van Laermans’ teksten over hedendaagse dans op onze website.

The sound of movement, Performance lecture

“It sounds incredibly naïve, but I’ve always considered dance and music as twins, because a series of movements shows the body in a musical condition. A series of movements makes a sound body and follows an inaudible melody, a sound line that is strictly visual.”

It’s this intuition that forms the starting point for the lecture/performance that Rudi Laermans will perform together with Viennese musician and composer Burkhard Stangl. Text and music (improvised live) are inspired by a video essay with excerpts from dance performances and Asian kung fu films. This one-off performance is part of the presentation of a selection of Laermans’s texts about contemporary dance on our website.

Sarma herpubliceert een 80tal kernteksten van Rudi Laermans online. Teksten over choreografen Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Vincent Dunoyer, Jan Lauwers, Jan Fabre, Deep Blue, Forsythe, Meg Stuart,... maar ook over thema's als de Vlaamse Golf, lichamelijkheid, theatraliteit, dans- en cultuurbeleid...
De meeste teksten werden gepubliceerd in de periode tussen 1995 en 2005 in verschillende boeken en tijdschriften, waaronder een groot deel in Etcetera.

Anthology

Sarma republishes online about 80 key texts by Rudi Laermans. The selected texts reflect upon the work of choreographers such as Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Vincent Dunoyer, Jan Lauwers, Jan Fabre, Deep Blue, Forsythe, Meg Stuart... but also upon themes such as The Flemish Wave, the body, theatricality, dance and culture policy...
Most of the texts were originally published in Dutch between 1995 and 2005 in several books and magazines, e.g. the Flemish performance magazine Etcetera.

Bio

Publiek Vlaanderen kent Rudi Laermans, als academisch socioloog werkzaam aan de KULeuven, vooral van zijn talloze bijdragen aan het cultuurdebat. Hij is daarnaast al jarenlang actief als essayist, met een uitgesproken interesse voor het reilen en zeilen binnen de hedendaagse dans. Laermans is van bij de opstart van de school ook gastdocent Theorie in PARTS, bekleedde onlangs de Valeska Gert leerstoel voor dansstudies van de Freie Universität Berlin, en werkt momenteel aan een boek over hedendaagse dans. ‘The sound of movement’ is zijn eerste lecture-performance!

Bio

Rudi Laermans is one of Belgium’s most important art sociologists who has published extensively on dance policy, the body, popular culture, and on the course of some specific choreographers. Laermans is teaching at PARTS and he was recently invited as a professor at the Freie Universität Berlin. He is currently working on a book about contemporary dance. 'The sound of movement' is his first performance lecture!
