Over the last years Sarma has evolved from an online platform for dance criticism to a laboratory for discourse, research, dramaturgy and creation in the field of dance and beyond. To further develop Sarma’s new function as a laboratory and to enhance the bonds with the Brussels dance community, Sarma joined forces with WorkSpace Brussels, which offers residencies and production support for young artists in dance and performance. In 2011 Sarma and WorkSpace Brussels will collaborate on organizing a variety of dramaturgical practices and on facilitating contexts for the Brussels dance community to meet and exchange.

More specifically we’re planning some salons on dramaturgical practices, two workshops (on ‘physical dramaturgy’ with Martin Nachbar & Jeroen Peeters; on image and style with DD Dorvillier and David Bergé), ad hoc master classes a.o. by Philipp Gehmacher, and an open dramaturgy laboratory. Furthermore we are setting up a ‘dramaturgical pool’, consisting of dramaturges with varying age, experience and backgrounds. We welcome professional dramaturges who already have a long-standing career, but also interns who like to get more experience in the field. The residents at WorkSpace Brussels can turn to this pool when in need of dramaturgical assistance or feedback, and in parallel we bring artists and dramaturges together to reflect on the manifold practices of dramaturgy as such.

Parallel to the collaboration with WorkSpace Brussels, Sarma continues to be an autonomous organization that embeds its activities in different contexts. In 2011 we’ll organize monthly salons, each time hosted by another partner organization, where artists and researchers are invited to speak about new artistic and dramaturgical practices. We open on Januari 25 @ Kaaistudio with a presentation of Jonathan Burrows’ A Choreographer’s Handbook. Researcher Scott deLahunta discusses the heterogeneous forms the “publishing of choreographic ideas” takes today. Choreographer and philosopher Noé Soulier demonstrates how a new generation works with these documents.

Documentation and artistic research continue to play a pivotal role in Sarma’s mission. In 2011 we’ll publish a text collection on dramaturgy, we will document the dramaturgical practices we engage in on our website, and in collaboration with Constant we are working on Oral Site, a website that will host oral archives and audio documents.

De voorbije jaren is Sarma geëvolueerd van een on-line publicatieplatform voor danskritiek tot een werkplaats waarin naast discursieve projecten en documentatie ook dramaturgie en artistiek onderzoek een centrale plek hebben. Om die hernieuwde werking en de band met de Brusselse dansgemeenschap te versterken, ging Sarma een structurele samenwerking aan met WorkSpace Brussels, dat kunstenaars in het veld van dans en performance residentie- en productieondersteuning biedt. In 2011 stellen Sarma en WorkSpace Brussels een programma samen met een focus op dramaturgie, onderzoek en inhoudelijke ondersteuning van de Brusselse dansgemeenschap door contexten voor ontmoeting en uitwisseling te organiseren.

Concreet plannen we samen enkele salons, twee workshops (rond ‘fysieke dramaturgie’ met Martin Nachbar & Jeroen Peeters; rond ChoreoPHOTOgraphy met DD Dorvillier en David Bergé), ad hoc masterclasses met o.a. We stellen verder een dramaturgiepool samen bestaande uit beginnende dramaturgen, maar ook mensen die ervaren en beslagen zijn in het dramaturgisch en inhoudelijk begeleiden van artistieke processen. De residerende kunstenaars bij WorkSpace Brussels kunnen zich beroepen op de dramaturgiepool wanneer zij nood hebben aan inhoudelijke begeleiding en feedback, maar we brengen ook kunstenaars en dramaturgen samen die zich willen buigen over de betekenis en de praktijk van dramaturgie op zich.

Als autonome organisatie zal Sarma blijven inspelen op verschillende contexten en haar werking steeds opnieuw inbedden. We plannen een reeks maandelijkse salons op diverse plekken in Brussel waarin kunstenaars en onderzoekers spreken over nieuwe artistieke en dramaturgische praktijken. Tijdens het eerste salon - 25 januari @ Kaaistudio - presenteert Jonathan Burrows’ A Choreographer’s Handbook. Onderzoeker Scott deLahunta spreekt over de diverse vormen die de “publicatie van choreografische ideeën” vandaag aanneemt. Choreograaf en filosoof Noé Soulier demonstreert hoe een nieuwe generatie met die documenten aan de slag gaat.

Documentatie en artistiek onderzoek blijven een belangrijke plaats innemen binnen de werking van Sarma. We werken aan een tekstcollectie rond dramaturgie, we documenteren werkprocessen die zich in de beslotenheid van de studio afspelen op onze website, en in samenwerking met Constant werken we aan de ontsluiting van orale archieven via de ontwikkeling van de website Oral Site.
