Intro

Based in Tokyo as a dance critic an journalist, she writes on theatre, performance and dance for Japanese specialised magazines, including Dance Magazine, Ballet, Dance Art and Theatre Arts, and has been writing for several newspapers since the early eighties. She is also correspondent for Ballet International/Tanz Aktuell. Her past activities include the first Conference for Asian Women and Theatre, Triangle Arts Program Project in Dance in 1997, and the international Butoh Project, 'EX…IT 99'. She is a Juror of the Ballet Competition in Nagoya. Her other memberships include: International Association of Theatre Critics, Japanese Society for Dance Research, and the Dance Critics' Society of Japan.

Sarma will collect in a first phase all her English writings. In a second phase a selection will be made of her Japanese reviews from the early eighties until now, and put on line in English translation. This anthology will highlight the specific view of Japan's most important critic on Japanese dance, such as the development of Butoh. A broader view on Asian, European and American dance will function as a frame of reference.
