Mplayer is an open source movie player. It has many features including fullscreen and accelerated playback, realtime audio and video filters, and subtitle display.

Mencoder is the encoding component to the mplayer software. Mencoder does not require / involve any code to actually display or play, but rather gives access to the many transcoding and editing possibilities of mplayer.
